Since April 2005, The Institute has presented its annual Leadership in Civic Engagement Awards to students, staff and faculty, and community members. These awards recognize individuals and groups, both on- and off-campus, who have contributed in exceptional ways to the quality of life at SUNY Cortland and to our shared greater Cortland community.
In 2024, the Institute began awarding Leadership in Democracy Engagement Awards, which recognize individuals' and groups' exceptional contributions by partnering with government.
Examples of awarded engagement activities are -
- Creating a civic engagement organization
- Raising outstanding amounts of donated items or funds for a civic cause
- Strengthening community cohesiveness
- Addressing a cause of, or a contributing factor to, hunger and homelessness
- Advocating for youth and social justice
