Alexandru Balas
Alexandru Balas, International Studies Department and Clark Center for Global Engagement, co-authored a book, The Puzzle of Peace: The Evolution of Peace in the International System that was selected as the 2017 winner of the J. David Singer Book Award by the International Studies Association-Midwest. Also, the book was one of seven finalists for American Political Science Association’s 2017 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book on government, politics, or international affairs. It was co-authored with Paul Diehl and Gary Goertz and published in New York by Oxford University Press, 2016.
Lin Lin
Lin Lin, Childhood and Early Childhood Education Department, presented at the National Council for the Social Studies annual convention on Nov. 21 in Boston, Mass. Her presentation was titled “Chinese History Teachers (ir)Responsive Instruction after September 11, 2001.”
Bonni C. Hodges
Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, organized the webinar “School Health Education in the 21st Century” for the American Association for Health Education [AAHE]. AAHE webinars are developed for professionals, students and the general public for professional development, continuing education credit and general knowledge. The webinar was developed and presented by Hodges and her colleagues Donna Videto, Health Department; Tami Benham-Deal, University of Wyoming; and Nancy Hudson, Council of Chief State School Officers. It was delivered live on Nov. 16 and is available as a webinar-on-demand through AAHE.
Timothy J. Baroni
Timothy J. Baroni, distinguished professor emeritus of biological sciences, was a co-author on a peer-reviewed article published in Fungal Systematics and Evolution titled “Phylloporus and Phylloboletellus are no longer alone: Phylloporopsis gen. nov. (Boletaceae), a new smooth-spored lamellate genus to accommodate the American Phylloporus boletinoides.” The work was a collaboration between researchers from Italy and the U.S., based on collections from the Dominican Republic and eastern U.S. made over the past decade. Baroni was also a co-author on a peer-reviewed article on a different group of boletes (porcini) published recently in Mycologia titled “A global view of Gyroporus (Boletaceae): molecular phylogenetics, diversity patterns, and new species.” This publication was part of the Ph.D. thesis work of Naveed Davoodian from the New York Botanical Garden and incorporated research contributions from a number of colleagues from the U.S., Australia, Thailand, Japan and Belgium. Baroni served as an advisor on Naveed’s Ph.D. committee and also contributed research collections from the Gulf Coast that were obtained on Baroni’s second sabbatical leave in the 1990’s.
Cheri Skipworth
Cheri Skipworth, residence hall director for Higgins Hall, participated in the Association of College and Personnel Administrators (ACPA) Conference held March 26-30 in Baltimore, Md. Skipworth serves on Pan African Network on the Committee for Multicultural Affairs. She helped to plan the Cultural Fest for the conference, which had 10 different performances.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of the new eighth edition of his book, The Politics of Gun Control, just published by Routledge. First published in 1995, the book has become the standard in the field and is widely cited and used across several fields of study.

Jordan Kobritz, Sport Management Department, had his article “A-Rod’s Legal Team Adopts a Scorched Earth Approach” published in the Nov. 1 edition of Sport Litigation Alert.
Alexandru Balas
Alexandru Balas, International Studies Department and director of the Clark Center for International Education, gave a presentation titled “When Good People Do Something: The Actions of Two Romanians and a Salvadoran During the Holocaust” as part of the Conversations in Conflict Studies Series at the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation. The series was held on Feb. 6 at Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.
