Doug Langhans
Doug Langhans, Admissions Office, recently attended the European Association for International Education (EAIE) 2017 Conference in Seville, Spain. He represented Study New York, a consortium of SUNY, CUNY and private institutions formed to promote New York as a destination for international students. Langhans, Study New York chair-elect, exhibited at the conference in conjunction with EducationUSA. He met with a variety of international education colleagues to discuss the advantages of studying in New York.

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has had his 2015 book, Guns across America, reviewed in the New York Review of Books, along with a letter exchange with the reviewer in a subsequent issue. Daniela Baban Hurrle
Daniela Baban Hurrle, International Programs Office, was awarded the Clark Center Internationalization Award on April 27. Since 2010, the Clark Center Internationalization Award is given each year at SUNY Cortland to recognize individuals from the faculty or staff who have significantly contributed to or shown leadership in internationalizing the campus.
In selecting an honoree, the Clark Center Steering Committee recognizes the variety of ways an individual can enrich SUNY Cortland and the wider community. Recognized activities include, for example, expanding study abroad opportunities or mentoring international students on campus. Awardees have also repeatedly exposed SUNY Cortland students to a diversity of international perspectives, whether by presenting their scholarship, bringing guest scholars to campus, promoting the study of foreign languages, or diversifying our curriculum.

Tom Lickona, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, had his article, “Prevent Bullying, Promote Kindness: 20 Things All Schools Can Do,” reprinted in Catholic Education Resource Center’s (CERC) Weekly Update, an online Canadian newsletter. The article first appeared in the Winter/Spring 2012 issue of Excellence & Ethics, the education letter of SUNY Cortland’s Center for the 4th and 5th Rs.

Tyler Bradway, English Department, gave an invited guest lecture on April 19 at Ithaca College titled “Throuple Plots: Queer Kinship and Narrative Form.” The event was sponsored by the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program and the English Department.
Matt Madden, Mark Dodds and Kate Polasek
Matt Madden, Physical Education Department, Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, and Kate Polasek, Kinesiology Department, presented “Female rights to physical education in the United States and the interpretation of co-educational classes” at the European Association for Sport Management Conference, held Sept. 5 to 8 in Innsbruck, Austria.
Mechthild Nagel
Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), holds a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) 2012-13 Visiting Professorship at Fulda University of Applied Science, a partner university of SUNY Cortland. Recently, she presented a paper titled “An Ubuntu Ethics of Punishment” at the 7th Philosophy Conference hosted by Athens Institute for Education & Research (ATINER) in Athens, Greece. Also, Nagel has been invited to chair the program committee for gender studies, which will be embedded in the 2014 sociology conference hosted by ATINER.
Eamon O'Shea
Eamon O'Shea, University Police Department, received a State University of New York 2021 University Police Award in a ceremony hosted by the SUNY Police Chiefs Association on Nov. 16 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The annual awards honor lieutenants, officers and staff who played a key role in life-saving events in the past year, as well as others on the New York University Police force for their outstanding professional service.
Kent M. Johnson
Kent M. Johnson, Sociology/Anthropology Department, had his chapter, “Opening Up the Family Tree: Promoting More Diverse and Inclusive Studies of Family, Kinship, and Relatedness in Bioarchaeology,” published recently in the edited volume Bioarchaeologists Speak Out: Deep Time Perspectives on Contemporary Issues. The volume was published by Springer.
John C. Hartsock
John C. Hartsock, Communication and Media Studies Department, had his article, “Explorando o Journalismo Literario e a Verdaded no Vinho,” published in the recent issue of the journal Brazilian Journalism Research. The article was translated into Portuguese by Mateus Yuri Passos of the Universidade Metodista de São Paolo.
