Seth N. Asumah
Seth N. Asumah, Africana Studies and Political Science departments, received a national appointment to referee the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Soccer Championships from Nov. 3-6, hosted by Tompkins County Community College, Dryden, N.Y. Asumah is a member of the United States Soccer Federation and the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association. He has represented the United States in five international matches and has received six national appointments to officiate the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Final Four Championship games in all divisions. This is his fourth NJCAA National Soccer Championship appointment.

Jason Tucker, English Department, served on the panel “Balancing Professional Writing with Your Creative Side,” at The Association of Writers and Writing Program’s 2011 AWP Conference on Feb. 4 in Washington D.C.
Barbara Wisch
Barbara Wisch, Art and Art History Department, had an article accepted by the Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome. The article, titled “The Matrix: Le sette chiese di Roma of 1575 and the Image of Pilgrimage,” will appear in issue 56, 2011.
Timothy J. Baroni
Timothy J. Baroni, Biological Sciences Department, was a keynote speaker at the 34th Annual Foray of the Northeast Mycological Federation held Sept. 23-26, 2010, in Kerhonkson, N.Y. He presented “Macrofungi in Tropical America, Some New — Some Not So New — What it Tells Us.”
Baroni was a co-author of an article titled “Aurantiopileus mayanensis a new genus and species of polypore (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from Belize with connections to existing Asian species,” that ran in the Nov. 19, 2010, issue of North American Fungi, volume 5. Co-authors were mycologists from Canada; the USDA-Forest Service, Madison, Wis.; and University of Oslo, Norway. The new genus and species of polypore is from a collection that Baroni made during a 12-scientist, helicopter-assisted, two-week expedition to Doyle’s Delight in the Maya Mountains of Belize in August of 2007 and was partially funded by a National Geographic Society research grant he received earlier that year.

Edward P. Caffarella, Educational Leadership Department, presented “Leadership in Education: Moving Beyond Administration and Management” on Dec. 2 as part of the Intellectual Discourse Series at the Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Tiantian Zheng
Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was invited to deliver a book talk and present a graduate seminar Feb. 22-24 at University of California at Berkeley.
Gretchen Herrmann
Gretchen Herrmann, Library, presented a paper on March 30 at the Society for Applied Anthropology in Baltimore, Md. Her paper, titled “Exchanging Memories, Emotions and a Little Cash: Alternative Economic Exchange in the US Garage Sale,” covered extended case studies of garage sale participants who sold items that still retained important emotional value and/or memories. She also addressed how the sellers incorporated their emotional values into the exchange.
Stephen Yang
Stephen Yang, Physical Education Department, was an invited speaker at “The Power of Play: Innovations in Getting Active Summit” sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and Nintendo of America. It was held Jan. 12-13 in San Francisco. The summit organizers wrote, “because of your expertise and specific interests, our team would love to hear your thoughts about “Video games as a gateway to encourage a lifetime of physical activity”; specifically, in providing people with an interactive alternative channel to start moving.” Yang was invited to speak to this cross-disciplinary, invitation-only group on this topic and to interact with the attendees throughout the day. The summit brought together leaders with unique perspectives from the divergent worlds of fitness, science, health care, research and video games. The invitation-only summit selected invitees based on their innovative research, pioneering play and diversity of cross-sector perspectives.
Melissa A. Morris
Melissa A. Morris, Physics Department, co-authored two abstracts presented at the American Astronomical Association Division of Planetary Sciences 46th annual meeting held Nov. 10-14 in Tucson, Ariz.: “Overcoming the Meter Barrier and The Formation of Systems with Tightly-packed Inner Planets (STIPs)” and “Measuring Fracture Properties of Meteorites: 3D Scans and Disruption Experiments.” As an attendee, she was invited to view a live feed of the Rosetta mission’s Philae lander, marking history of humans landing a spacecraft on a comet.
John Foley
John Foley, Physical Education Department, will be inducted as a fellow in the prestigious Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) at the annual conference in San Diego, Calif., on March 31.
