Faculty and Staff Activities

John C. Hartsock

John C. Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, was invited to give a lecture on June 21 to the doctoral program in human sciences at the University of Perugia on the relationship between literary journalism and ethnography. The University of Perugia is located in Perugia, Italy and is one of Italy’s oldest universities, founded in 1308. The invitation came about because Hartsock has been teaching a study abroad course at the Umbra Institute in Perugia for the last three summer sessions.

Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, was invited to co-present a symposium at the Social Justice Through Sport and Exercise Psychology Conference in March. The session was called “More than a Trend: Assessing the Literature on Trans Issues in Sport.”

Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, presented at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Sport History in May in Washington, D.C. Her talk “Who is a women’s sports advocate?” focused on the life and activism of Dr. Jean Grossholtz of Mt. Holyoke College.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “Flanagan’s Gun Permit, and Mine,” that was published in the New York Daily News on August 31. Spitzer argues that the man who shot a television reporter and cameraman in Virginia likely could not have obtained his gun had he lived in New York.

David Kilpatrick

David Kilpatrick, Psychology Department, presented a poster titled “The Compensating Dyslexics We Never Hear About: A Multiple Case Study Approach” for the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. The presentation took place at the society’s annual conference in July in Santa Fe, N.M.

Lisa Randolph and Tracy Frenyea

Lisa Randolph, Career Services, and Tracy Frenyea, Advisement and Transition, presented a concurrent session at the College Student Personnel Association of New York State conference held on Oct. 5 in Syracuse. “A Collaborative Evolution” reflected on the collaborations between Advisement and Transition, as part of Academic Affairs, and Career Services, as part of Student Affairs. They discussed how the collaboration has evolved from workshops for undeclared students to a one-credit elective course, Major and Career Exploration, co-taught by both offices, and what they learned in the process.

Kevin Dames and Jared Rosenberg

Kevin Dames and Jared Rosenberg, Kinesiology Department, coauthored a paper, "Where is the Power in a Power Analysis?" with graduate student Zoe Climenhaga. It appeared in the International Journal of Exercise Science.

College Names Leadership in Civic Engagement Honorees

Twenty-five SUNY Cortland students, three community members, five faculty members and 35 AmeriCorps members were recognized on April 19 with the College’s Leadership in Civic Engagement Awards.

The awards recognize exemplary service in support of community agencies, social change and civic engagement by SUNY Cortland students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members.

The recipients of seven civic engagement scholarships were awarded to Jessica Andrianos, Julie Gorman, Megan Flynn, Lynne Harris, Kristen Martin, Kara Silverman and Scott Stampfl.

The SUNY Cortland Emergency Medical Services received the Don Wilcox Award and Andrianos was recognized with the Cortland Area Chapter of the Alumni Association’s Community Service Award.

Award winners were selected by the Leadership in Civic Engagement Awards Committee, whose members are from campus departments and offices involved in opportunities for service activities with local, regional and national organizations, including the Institute for Civic Engagement and the Career Services Office. Also seated on the committee are a student, a community agency supervisor and an AmeriCorps member.

Student recipients were involved with a wide variety of activities, including leadership roles in the SUNY Cortland Relay for Life, tutoring and mentoring programs, reduction of bullying, economic development, literacy, health and wellness programming, hunger awareness, environmental protection and disaster relief.
