Jacob Wright
Jacob Wright, Career Services, received the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award for Individual Excellence at the annual SUNY Career Development Organization (SUNYCDO) conference held June 13 in Suffern, N.Y. Recognized for his outstanding performance and significant contribution to the career services field, the career coach and educator served as vice chair of the DEI Committee and the Conference Program Committee for SUNYCDO during the 2023-24 academic year.
Gregory Phelan
Gregory Phelan, Chemistry Department, awarded the SUNY Cortland Chemistry Award to high school junior, Dylan Reahr. He attends the Lafayette (N.Y.) Big Picture School. The award was presented at the Greater Syracuse Scholastic Science Fair, held March 25 at the Oncenter. Phelan and Kerri Freese, Chemistry Department, hosted a booth at the Scholastic Science Fair to promote sciences at SUNY Cortland and Noyce scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
Mechthild Nagel
Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and the Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), delivered a keynote on gender and the law at The Gender Construction of Society Conference held in April at Cantemir University, Bucharest, Romania. It will be published in a special issue of Journal of Research in Gender Studies in 2017.
Thomas S. Hischak
Thomas S. Hischak, Performing Arts Department, has signed a contract with McFarland Publishers to write the nonfiction book American Literature on Stage and Screen about 19th and 20th century American fiction that has been adapted for the theatre, film and television. McFarland recently released Hischak’s Disney Voice Actors: A Biographical Dictionary about all performers who did voices for every Disney animated short and feature film from “Steamboat Willie” (1928) to “Tangled” (2010).
Lindsey Darvin
Lindsey Darvin, Sport Management Department, had her article “When virtual spaces meet the limitations of traditional sport: gender stereotyping in NBA2K” accepted for publication in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.
Also, she was on a Tucker Center Talks podcast, which is a co-production of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport and WiSP Sports. Her talk “Research of Women in Sports Leadership” can be heard online.
Jeff Radloff
Jeff Radloff, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, received the 2024 STANYS Excellence in College Teaching Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York State, Inc. On Nov. 2, @STANYSorg posted “Dr. Radloff’s work in #STEMEd and critical media literacy is shaping the future of teacher preparation.”
Ute Ritz-Deutch
Ute Ritz-Deutch, History Department, gave the keynote address at the Nov. 24 international webinar “Reproductive Choice of Women: A Fundamental Right” organized by St. Aloysius College in Mangaluru, India, which is one of SUNY Cortland's study abroad locations. The daylong webinar event was under the initiative of the National Commission of Women (NCW), India for better implementation of the existing policies, schemes, programs or projects relating to the well-being and empowerment of women. An article quoting Ritz-Deutch titled “Domestic violence increased during Covid-19 pandemic” was published in the Deccan Herald.
Ray Cotrufo
Ray Cotrufo, Sport Management Department, presented “An Examination of Fan Reactions to NFL Cause Related Marketing” at the Sport Marketing Association Conference, held Oct. 22-24 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Melissa A. Morris
Melissa A. Morris, Physics Department, gave an invited talk titled “Phyllosilicate Emission from Protoplanetary Disks. Is the Indirect Detection of Extrasolar Water Possible?” at Cornell University in early December. Also, she submitted a paper to The Astrophysical Journal Letters titled “New Insight into the Solar System’s Transition Disk Phase Provided by the Metal-rich Carbonaceous Chondrite Isheyevo.” Morris travelled to Salt Lake City, Utah, for three days in December for in-depth planetarium training, and to Arizona State University (ASU) from Jan. 8-10 to participate in an international conference that she helped organize. The conference was titled “AstroRecon 2015, Conference on Spacecraft Reconnaissance of Asteroid and Comet Interiors.” While at ASU, she met with fellow NASA grant collaborators and conducted experiments on meteoritic material, which will be reported in upcoming publications and future grant proposals. Most recently, Morris coauthored two posters presented at the 225th Astronomical Society Meeting held Jan. 4-8 in Seattle, Wash.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science emeritus, is the author of the new, ninth edition of his book “The Politics of Gun Control.” The book provides a comprehensive treatment of the major elements of the modern gun debate, including history, law, criminology, politics and policy. First published in 1995, the new edition is published by Routledge.
