Vierne Placide

Vierne Placide, Health Department, presented a poster titled “Factors influencing counseling adherence in medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction” at the 2019 AMERSA Conference held Nov. 7 to 9 in Boston. AMERSA is the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction, a non-profit professional organization whose mission is to improve health and well-being through interdisciplinary leadership in substance use education, research, clinical care and policy.

 

James Webb

James Webb, Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC), has been awarded the title of certified executive chef by the American Culinary Federation. This certification comes at the end of an intensive training process. Some of the requirements are completion of courses in food safety, supervisory management, a written and practical examination and more than five years as a supervisory chef. 

Webb has been with ASC since 2010. He led the culinary effort during the New York Jets training camp and has been instrumental in the development of many of ASC’s newer concepts like Pomodori and Greens & Grains. Webb is the executive chef at The Bistro in the Student Life Center and will now serve as ASC Dining’s senior executive chef.

Tiantian Zheng

Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was invited by University of Las Vegas to deliver a campus-wide book talk on Nov. 13 on her book Tongzhi Living: Men Attracted to Men in Postsocialist China.

Thomas Hischak

Thomas Hischak, professor emeritus of theatre, has signed a contract with Rowman & Littlefield to write the non-fiction book 1939 At the Movies: A Chronicle of Hollywood's Greatest Year.

Tadayuki Suzuki

Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, had his article, “Realities of War: Using Picture Books to Teach the Social Effects of Armed Conflicts,” published in the Multicultural Education Magazine in August. He coauthored this article with Barbara Fiehn, Jeanine Huss, and Roxanne Spencer at Western Kentucky University. 

Melinda Shimizu

Melinda Shimizu, Geography Department, had an article titled “Design a Children’s Map—Competition Edition!” published in March in The Geography Teacher.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of a book chapter titled “The Five Rules of Trump” for a new book on the Trump presidency, Presidential Leadership and the Trump Presidency, published by Palgrave Macmillan.

 

Varya McCaslin-Doyle

Varya McCaslin-Doyle, Information Systems and Security, passed her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam on May 19. 

Lin Lin

Lin Lin, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, was a presenter at the annual National Council for the Social Studies Conference on Nov. 17 and 18 in San Francisco, Calif. She presented “Reading Globally: Promoting Pre-service Teachers’ Global and Cross-Cultural Understanding” and co-presented “Engaging Elementary Children in Community-based PBL - Project-Based Learning - in Chinese Elementary Schools” with Dr. Yali Zhao from Georgia State University. Also, Lin presented “Promoting Teacher Candidates’ Global Perspectives” on Nov. 8 at Cornell University as part of the “Global Voices in Education” series. She has been a Global Learning Fellow with the Southeast Asian Studies and South Asian Studies Centers at Cornell University.  

Erik Lind

Erik Lind, Kinesiology Department, and Ian Macali, Lauren Smith, Melody Dale, Hilary DeShong and Megan Holmes from Mississippi State University, had an article published in Journal of Sports Sciences. The paper, “Influence of motivation and personality on physical activity: A systematic review” summarizes the individual effects of motivation and personality and the interplay of both on physical activity. Their findings may help guide interventions designed to promote greater physical activity.
