Cyndi Guy
Cyndi Guy, Institute for Civic Engagement, delivered a presentation titled “Chalk it Up to Service — Tips on Great Customer Service,” to approximately 25 business leaders on Nov. 18 at a workshop sponsored by the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce. Guy also has been invited to serve on the Cortland Downtown Partnership (CDP) Board. She will begin serving in January and will be on the CDP Promotions Committee.

Irena Vincent, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, presented a poster session on “A Multisensory Approach to Teaching and Learning Speech Anatomy” at the 2010 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention held Nov. 18-20 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Beth Shiner Klein
Beth Shiner Klein, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, was a co-presenter at the “Planning for Teacher Preparation in N.Y.S. — Integrating Strategies into the Environmental Literacy Plan” pre-conference symposia at the North American Association for Environmental Education annual conference on Sept. 29 in Buffalo, N.Y. Also at the conference, she presented a session titled, “Integrating Sustainability Education into Preservice Elementary and Secondary Teacher Preparation."
In addition, Klein co-edited a book, The Inclusion of Environmental Education in Science Teacher Preparation, published by Springer and sponsored by the Association for Science Teacher Education. Co-editors are Alec Bodzin of Lehigh University and Starlin Weaver of Salisbury University.

Mary Emm, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, along with a colleague, presented a poster session at the 2010 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention held Nov. 18-20 in Philadelphia, Pa. The poster was titled “Leadership in Teaching: Utilizing Student Perspectives on Administration and Supervision.”
Brian D. Barrett
Brian D. Barrett, Foundations and Social Advocacy, served as plenary speaker the Sixth International Basil Bernstein Symposium held in July in Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, he assisted in the delivery of several classroom sessions to participants in SUNY Cortland’s Australia Student Teaching Program and was interviewed on Australian national radio regarding the global context of education reform and the impending implementation of Australia’s national curriculum.

Gene Bierbaum, professor of communications studies emeritus, recently had his book, The Parliamentarian of Tomorrow, published by Xlibris. Bierbaum, who retired from SUNY Cortland in 1992, defines and explains the building blocks of the parliamentary profession. Ute Ritz-Deutch, History Department, presented a conference paper titled “German Colonists in Southern Brazil: Navigating Multiple Identities on the Brazilian Frontier,” at the Tales of Transit International Conference on June 9 in Antwerp, Belgium. The theme of the conference was transatlantic migration.

Maria Timberlake, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, had her research article titled “Nice, but we can’t afford it: Challenging Austerity and Finding Abundance in Inclusive Education” published in the December issue of International Journal of Inclusive Education.
Nancy Kane
Nancy Kane, Kinesiology and Physical Education departments, wrote a chapter titled “Cirit: An Etic View of Horseback Javelin,” that is included in the recently published book Do Cavalo, On Horses, edited by Constantino Pereira Martins.
