Li Jin

Li Jin, Geology Department, gave a presentation at the 2017 Geological Society of America Meeting on Oct. 23 in Seattle, Wash. She presented “Groundwater recharge and water-rock interaction from unsaturated zone of Badain Jaran desert.”

Mary McGuire and John Suarez

Mary McGuire, Institute for Civic Engagement, and John Suarez, Office of Service-Learning, conducted a Deliberative Dialog on Oct. 12, as part of the Institute for Civic Engagement’s “Economic Inequality Initiative.” Thirty-three people – 20 students, 10 community leaders and 3 faculty and staff members – explored long-term solutions to some of Cortland County’s socio-economic challenges. Key to this dialog’s success was the participation of people who represent differing economic and political points of view. Initiative members are now taking steps to develop some of the solutions.

Thomas Hischak

Thomas Hischak, Performing Arts Department, presented a performance workshop at the Po Saule (Under the Sun) International Student Theatre Festival at the University of Siauliai in Lithuania in May. He also taught classes on American theatre for two weeks at the university as part of a Fulbright grant.

Alexandru Balas

Alexandru Balas, Clark Center for Global Engagement and International Studies Program, had his latest book, Sharing the Burden of Peace. Inter-Organizational Cooperation in Peace Operations, published by Peter Lang. 

Jeremy Jimenez

Jeremy Jimenez, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, recently co-presented his research about high school students taking the first LGBTQ class offered in a U.S. public school at the American Educational Research Association in New York City.

Genevieve Birren and Jordan Kobritz

Genevieve Birren and Jordan Kobritz, Sport Management Department, presented “NASCAR’s Richmond Race: Good ‘Ole Boys or Race Fixing?” at the 27th Annual Sport and Recreation Law Association Conference held Feb. 26-March 1 in Orlando, Fla. 

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been appointed to a three-year term to serve on the SUNY Research Council. The council is a 15-member body that serves in an advisory capacity to the SUNY Board of Trustees, the SUNY Chancellor and the Research Foundation. Its purpose is to advise and make recommendations on research, innovation, and education for the SUNY system and the state. The board members consist of scholars of many disciplines from around the country.

Peter Ducey

Peter Ducey, Biological Sciences Department, recently served as a judge in the area of ecology and environmental biology for the national Sigma Xi 2015 Student Research Showcase. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is the international honor society of science and engineering and is one of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world. In the Research Showcase, outstanding graduate, undergraduate and high school students join professional research scientists from North America and abroad to present their research findings. Also, Ducey recently gave an invited presentation at Cornell University titled “Leaving No Stones Unturned: Science and Careers Related to Herpetofauna and Other Amazing, but Often Hidden, Creatures.” The Cornell Herpetological Society hosted the presentation.

Matt Whitman

Matt Whitman, an AmeriCorps member in service with the Institute for Civic Engagement, was recognized on May 6 by the Southern Tier Opportunity Coalition in Binghamton, N.Y., as a recipient of a “20 in their Twenties” award for young people from the Binghamton area making a difference in their communities. Mary Schlarb

Mary Schlarb, International Programs, recently received the Clark Center for Global Engagement Internationalization Award. It honors SUNY Cortland faculty and staff who have performed outstanding work in global engagement. Schlarb has done outstanding work to promote global engagement by increasing the number of SUNY Cortland study abroad opportunities for students. This has led to a greater number of students studying abroad and an increase of faculty involved in faculty-led study abroad programs.
