Jeremiah Donovan

Jeremiah Donovan, Art and Art History Department, had his recent ceramic sculptural work selected by jury for inclusion in the Arnot Art Museum’s 73rd Fine Art Exhibition in Elmira, N.Y. The exhibit includes 16 selected artists using various mediums. It will open Tuesday, Oct. 11, and continue through Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.

Erik Lind, Larissa True, Debbie Van Langen and Jim Hokanson and John Foley

Erik Lind, Larissa True, Debbie Van Langen and Jim Hokanson, Kinesiology Department and John Foley, Physical Education Department, recently co-authored a paper that was published in the journal Sports. Lindsey Taylor (Funch) M.S. ’15 Exercise Science was the lead author on the paper, which is titled “Four Weeks of Off-Season Training Improves Peak Oxygen Consumption in Female Field Hockey Players.”

Melissa McGrady, Esq.

Melissa McGrady, Esq., University Police Department, recently received certification from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as a police juvenile officer. Her certification completes the department’s goal to have four juvenile officers in preparation for the state’s Raise the Age initiative. By October 2018, the age for criminal responsibility will be raised to 18 years of age. With the new law in place, many first-year students that are 17 years old will now be treated as juveniles should they enter the criminal justice system.

Denise D. Knight

Denise D. Knight, English Department, presented a paper titled “Charlotte Perkins Gilman In and On Italy” at the Transatlantic Women II Conference held in June in Florence, Italy.

Kathleen A. Lawrence

Kathleen A. Lawrence, Communication and Media Studies Department, received word that her poem “Dorothy Delivered” has been awarded third place in the Highland Park Poetry’s 2019 Poetry Challenge for L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz in the Adult Non-Resident Category. In addition, her poem “What to Do?” has been awarded honorable mention in the same contest for Tricubes (a specific poetry form) in the Adult Non-Resident Category. Highland Park Poetry will be publishing a chapbook of all selected poems and Lawrence’s two poems will appear in that anthology. 

Melissa Morris

Melissa Morris, Physics Department, gave an invited talk on Oct. 20 at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.  Also, she was invited to give a talk in March 2017 to the star and planet formation group at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Seth N. Asumah and Mechthild Nagel,

Seth N. Asumah, Political Science and Africana Studies departments, and Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and the Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), had their peer-reviewed anthology titled Diversity, Social Justice, and Inclusive Excellence: Transdisciplinary and Global Perspectives published by SUNY Press. The essays focus on the components of diversity, social justice and inclusive excellence, not just within the United States but also in other parts of the world. The contributors to the anthology include Elizabeth Davis-Russell, president of Tubman University, Liberia, and former provost and vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Cortland, and other prominent scholars from 11 different universities.  SUNY Cortland contributors include: Janet Duncan, Foundations and Social Advocacy and Educational Leadership Department; Ibipo Johnston-Anumonwo, Geography Department, and; Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department. With generous support from Provost Mark Prus, the anthology was made available to participants of the 2014 Summer Diversity Institute.  The book will be on display by SUNY Press at the first SUNY-wide diversity conference, “Making Diversity Count: Ensuring Equity, Inclusion, Access and Impact,” set for Nov 12-13 at the Marriott Inn in Albany, N.Y.

Donna M. Videto and Aimee Greeley

Donna M. Videto and Aimee Greeley, Health Department and School Health Systems Change Project, presented two sessions at the New York State Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) 75th Annual Conference held Nov. 15-17 at Turning Stone Resort in Oneida, N.Y. The sessions were titled: “Following Footprints: An Ecological Scan of School Health and Wellness” and “Overcoming Barriers to Developing Effective School Health Systems.” In addition, Videto was awarded the NYSAHPERD Amazing People Award in the Health Education Section for outstanding contributions and commitment to professional excellence. 

Moyi Jia

Moyi Jia, Communication and Media Studies Department, had her article, “Understanding Mental Health Organizations’ Instagram Through Visuals: A Content Analysis,” published in Health Communication, one of the leading journals in the field.

Chris Badurek

Chris Badurek, Geography Department, had his applied learning projects highlighted in an article in The Umbrella – The SUNY Newsletter for Applied Learning. The June 2020 issue focuses on co-curricular applied learning experiences and highlights projects from across many of the SUNY campuses. The article describes the NSF Common Problem Pedagogy Project collaboration between students in Badurek’s environmental remote sensing course and Biological Sciences Professor Steve Broyles’ tree biology course. Students from both courses joined into teams to collect and analyze tree data for the village of Homer, N.Y., in Fall 2019. The article also includes an extension of this work by student intern Connor Brierton on Badurek’s Cortland Applied Learning Practitioners grant from SUNY Cortland’s Institute for Civic Engagement. Brierton and Badurek reported on this work in a Transformations 2020 research poster.
