Mary Lynch Kennedy
Mary Lynch Kennedy, English, and Hadley M. Smith, Ithaca College, have published an expanded fourth edition of Reading and Writing in the Academic Community, Prentice Hall, 2010. The book is a comprehensive rhetoric covering critical reading and the major genres of academic writing that students encounter as undergraduates. Also, Kennedy was invited to give a two-hour workshop, "Exploring Memories in Writing," at the 59th Annual Conference of the New York State English Council held Oct. 22 in Albany N.Y. Kennedy and Ross Borden, English, gave a presentation Sept. 16 on Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir, Persepolis, to the Ladies Literary Club of Cortland. This year the Literary Club is celebrating its 130th anniversary.

Brett Troyan, history, organized and hosted the New York Latin American History Workshop at SUNY Cortland, which took place on Oct. 16.
Bob Ponterio and Jean LeLoup
Bob Ponterio, international communications and culture, and Jean LeLoup, international communications and culture emerita, are the authors of an article appearing in the Oct. 2009 volume of The Language Educator, a publication of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The article, "FLTeach Marks 15 Years as Foreign Language Forum," describes the FLTeach project, a discussion forum for teachers of all languages at all levels of instruction that was begun by LeLoup and Ponterio in February 1994 and now has more than 5,000 subscribers in all 50 states and 73 foreign countries.
Ubaldo Valli
Ubaldo Valli, Performing Arts Department, has been selected as a prize winner in The American Prize National Nonprofit Competition in the Performing Arts. Valli shared third prize in the Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award in Orchestral Programming, College/University Division category. The American Prize is “the nation’s most comprehensive series of contests in the classical arts” and is “designed to evaluate, recognize and reward the best performers, ensembles, composers and administrators in the United States.”
Bonni C. Hodges
Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, was an invited presenter at the SOPHE/CDC Institute for Higher Education (IHE) Academy, held March 20 and 21 in Atlanta, Ga. The IHE Academy works with teams from professional preparation programs across the country on refining and updating curricula and skills, so their programs provide their students with the most current essential tools required to teach health and physical education with a focus on health education teacher preparation.
Also, Hodges presented a poster on Educational Support Professionals: “Hidden Assets in Plain Sight” at the annual conference of the Society for Public Health Education held March 21 to 24 in Atlanta.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Cortland City Planning Commission. His appointment was approved by the City Council in November.
Henry Steck
Henry Steck, Political Science Department, recently attended the annual conference of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy held at Uludag University in Bursa, Turkey. He presented "Campaigning in Poetry - Governing in Prose: Reflections on President Obama's First Months."
Arden Zipp
Arden Zipp, chemistry, chaired the annual meeting of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Subcommittee meeting that was recently held at the headquarters of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. Zipp has chaired the USNCO Task Force for several years and has recently added the Subcommittee Chairmanship to his duties. The Task Force writes and grades the annual exams used to select 20 students to attend a two-week study camp where a four-person team is identiied to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Mary Gfeller, Claus Schubert and Christopher Donohue
Mary Gfeller, Claus Schubert and Christopher Donohue, Mathematics Department, were informed that their paper, “Using Group Explorer in Teaching Abstract Algebra,” was accepted by the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology. The paper was authored by Schubert and Gfeller, faculty in the Mathematics Department, and Donohue, a former graduate student.
Susan Barnett
Susan Barnett, Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department, was featured in WalletHub’s May 31 article “2017’s Best & Worst Cities for Staycations.” Barnett was one 13 educators on the panel of experts who helped determine the best staycation spots by comparing the 150 most populated U.S. cities across three key dimensions: 1) recreation, 2) food and entertainment and 3) rest and relaxation.
