Peter Ducey

Peter Ducey, Biological Sciences Department, co-authored the presentation “Predator-Prey Relationships Between Streamside Salamanders and Earthworm Communities Inhabiting the Riparian Zone” recently given by lead author and Cortland alumna Rebecca Forrest Pinder ’02 at the 10th International Symposium on Earthworm Ecology held in Athens, Ga., in June. Pinder has recently completed her Ph.D. at University at Albany in ecology and evolutionary biology and is currently a faculty member at Columbia-Greene Community College. The presentation was part of a broader study investigating the influences of non-native earthworms on biotic and abiotic components of stream ecosystems.

Tadayuki Suzuki

Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, had a blog articled titled “Reading When Aidan Became a Brother with elementary students” published by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in July. Also, he co-authored the article “Children’s Book Reviews: “Less-known” Award Winning Books,” which was published in the combined Fall 2019-Spring 2020 issue of The Dragon Lode, a journal published by the Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association.

Bruce Mattingly

Bruce Mattingly, School of Arts and Sciences, co-organized a virtual conference titled “Preparing Students for the 21st Century Workforce: A Free, Virtual Workshop on Cross-Disciplinary, Team- and Project-based Experiences,” hosted Aug. 4 by Westminster College (Pa.). He also presented a breakout session titled “Integrating Cross-Disciplinary Problem-Solving into your Course.”

Chris Manaseri

Chris Manaseri, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, had his article titled “Keeping Schoolhouses in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State,” published in the Country School Journal, Volume 6.

Bonni C. Hodges

Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, recently served as the chair of the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation site visit team for the University of Nebraska-Omaha's bachelor's degree in public health.

Officer Melissa Keelhar

Officer Melissa Keelhar M '10, University Police Department (UPD), was sworn in by President Erik J. Bitterbaum as an investigator on July 30. Keelhar’s partner, K-9 Meekah, was awarded a badge and also sworn in as UPD’s therapy K-9. Keelhar joined SUNY Cortland UPD in 2018.Meekah joined the UPD in 2023when she was 15 weeks old as the force’s first therapy dog. 

Debbie Warnock

Debbie Warnock, Sociology/Anthropology Department, gave an invited talk on “Inequalities in Educational Transitions” at Bennington College in September.

Keith Newvine

Keith Newvine, Literacy Department, worked with stakeholders throughout New York state to create the New York State Education Department K-3 Literacy Curriculum Review Guide.

Fran Elia

Fran Elia, sports information director, was presented the 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Warren Berg Award at the CoSIDA Convention on June 17 in Orlando, Fla. The award is presented annually by the 3,000-member organization to a CoSIDA College Division member who has made outstanding contributions to the field of sports information, and who, by his or her activities, has brought dignity and prestige to the profession.

                  In February, the Metropolitan New York Football Writers and USA College Football presented Elia with the Bob Kenworthy Div. III Football Communications Award at the Eastern College Football Awards Banquet held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Sports information director since 1992, Elia received the Fraser Stokes Award for dedication to Cortland athletics in 1996, the Eastern College Athletic Conference – Sports Information Directors Association’s Irving T. Marsh Service Bureau Award for excellence in the profession in 2009 and induction into the Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame as an honorary member in 2012.

Evan Faulkenbury

Evan Faulkenbury, History Department, had an article published in the peer-reviewed journal The Public Historian. “A Problem of Visibility: Remembering and Forgetting the Civil War in Cortland, New York” is about the history of Cortland’s Union soldier monument that stands downtown in Courthouse Park. A photograph from its 1877 dedication ceremony was featured on the cover of the journal.
