Jeremy Jimenez

Jeremy Jimenez, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, gave a talk to middle/high school students and teachers about “Ecological Justice and the 9 Planetary boundaries” at the sixth annual Central New York Youth Climate Summit held Feb. 11 at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

 

Katie Ducett

In August, Katie Ducett, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, and the entire State of the Art Executive Committee were honored by the National Down Syndrome Congress with the Organization of the Year award at their annual Big Game Ball in Atlanta, Georgia.

Katie also accepted the Megan Cartier Early Career Scholar Award in October at the SOTA Conference in Syracuse, N.Y. 

Peter McGinnis

Peter McGinnis, Distinguished Service Professor of Kinesiology, had a Greek translation of the 4th edition of his textbook, Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise, published by Konstadaras in Greece. Counting this translation and those of this and previous editions, the book has now been translated into seven different languages: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese and now Greek.  

Tyler Bradway

Tyler Bradway, English Department, has been selected to serve as guest editor of College Literature: A Journal of Critical Literary Studies, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. The special issue, titled “Lively Words: The Politics and Poetics of Experimental Writing,” will examine the social and historical significance of experimental writing in the 20th and 21st centuries. Also, Bradway received the Excellence in Teaching Award for Tenure Track Faculty.

John C. Hartsock

John C. Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, gave a panel presentation at the 11th annual conference of the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies, held at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The presentation, “The Banal of the Ideal, the Affirmation of the Banal,” explored how Svetlana Alexievich, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature last year for her literary journalism, assaults the banality of secular mythologies in her reporting on the former Soviet Union.

Alexis Blavos

Alexis Blavos, Health Department, recently was elected deputy coordinator for the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations for a term that extends to 2021.

Patricia Martínez de la Vega Mansilla

Patricia Martínez de la Vega Mansilla, Modern Languages Department, and Abigail Cleary from Lansing High School, presented a workshop titled “Technology as a Tool for Memorization” at the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) Conference - 21st Century LOTE Education: Providing the Keys to College and Career Readiness held Oct. 31 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. LOTE is the acronym for Language Other Than English.

Kathleen A. Lawrence

Kathleen A. Lawrence, Communication and Media Studies Department, received word that her poem “Any Boy” has been accepted for publication by Green Linden Press in the forthcoming issue of Under a Warm Green Linden, Issue 8. The poem follows a challenging but favorite form for Lawrence, known as a spiraling abecedarian. 

Guiseppe Getto

Guiseppe Getto, English Department, presented his paper, “Composing Digital Writing Relationships: Toward an Infrastructural Approach to Digital Design and Pedagogy,” at the Conference on College Composition and Communication, held March 21-24 in St. Louis, Mo. Also in March, his poem, “On the Banks of Forgetting,” was accepted by The Sugar House Review. Getto received a Faculty Research Program grant for his new research project “New Media Engagement: Designing Civic Practices for Digital Writers.” Professional writing majors Erin Garrison and Jack Labriola, a dual major, will serve as research assistants for the project. Additionally, Getto received a Teaching Innovation Grant for the development of his new class for the professional writing major titled PWR 410: Digital and Technical Writing for Community Development. Finally, he formed a partnership with a technical writing company called ifixit.com that engages students in the creation of documentation for repairing broken technological devices.

Alexandru Balas

Alexandru Balas, International Studies Program, Clark Center for Global Engagement, International Studies Program and EU Erasmus+ Campus, has written a chapter titled “The European Union’s Role in Addressing Environmental Disputes in Central Asia: Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Reluctant 3rd Party” in the edited volume European Union Governance in Central Asia.
