Lisa Czirr, Jenifer Sigafoes Phelan and Maria McLane, Memorial Library, presented “The Flowers of Tomorrow Are in the Seeds of Today: Planting Seeds of Diversity in Your Library’s Collection So They’ll Bloom in Your Campus Community” at the SUNYLA 2021 (Virtual) annual conference held June 16 to 18. The conference theme was “From Seeds to Service: Growing the New Academic Library.” Their session showcased a guide for diverse classroom resources, discussing the background and process for building it, as well as current and future uses.
Christian Berenguer and Christopher Gutierrez
Christian Berenguer ’16 and Christopher Gutierrez ’17, graduate assistants in the Recreational Sports Department, worked with a group of 20 Cortland students, staff and community members during the summer months to train and prepare for the Dick's Sporting Goods Half Marathon, in which they competed on Sept. 22. “The group started off with a few individuals who simply wanted to run a race together, but then exploded to a group of 20 individuals,” said Gutierrez. The team name, NARP, an acronym for “Non-Athletic Regular People,” was created as an all-inclusive team for all fitness levels. The name was designed to encourage participants of the campus community to join in this race. Meredith Morell
Meredith Morell, Career Services, was recognized with the Rising Professional Award from SUNY Career Development Organization (SUNYDCO) during an online conference in June. The award goes to a SUNYDCO member with less than five years of service to the profession with significant contribution to the career services field.
Angela Pagano
Angela Pagano, Biological Sciences Department, was awarded the 2020 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York. This award is given to those whose careers exemplify STANYS’s mission receive the STANYS Excellence in Science Teaching Award at the Annual Conference. Their work showcases excellence in teaching, leading, and providing opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science.
Danica Savonick
Students in Danica Savonick’s English course, Publishing Literary and Cultural Criticism, created a new journal of literary and cultural analysis called Emblaze. Issue One is now live. Read Cortland students’ interpretations of books, TV shows, movies, music and more.
John C. Hartsock
John C. Hartsock, Communication and Media Studies Department, participated in a panel discussion at the 13th annual conference of the International Association for Literary Journalism at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in May in Vienna, Austria. He discussed “Internationalizing American Campuses: Teaching World Literary Journalism.”
Also at the conference, the second “John C. Hartsock Award for Best Article” published in Literary Journalism Studies for the previous publication year was awarded. The recipient was Julie Wheelwright of the City University of London for her article on the ethical relationships in Gay Talese’s Thy Neighbor’s Wife. The award was created by IALJS in 2017. Hartsock was the founding editor of the peer-reviewed Literary Journalism Studies, the official scholarly journal of the IALJS. Previously unreported was the first award recipient, Leslie Cowling of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, for 2016 publication year.
Lin Lin and Valerie Widdall
Lin Lin and Valerie Widdall, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, presented on the topic of “Expanding Pre-Service Teachers’ Global Education Pedagogy” at the annual conference of the National Council for the Social Studies on Nov. 13 in New Orleans, La.
Patricia Roiger
Patricia Roiger, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, was featured in a Cortland Standard article titled “History Lesson a ‘Hoot.’” Roiger regularly contributes to the program called ”Time Travel,” created by the Cortland County Historical Society and the Cortland Free Library to teach children about history.
R. Bruce Mattingly
R. Bruce Mattingly, School of Arts and Sciences, participated in a panel discussion on tenure issues in higher education hosted by Syracuse University on March 28. The panel was presented as part of SU’s Future Professoriate Program for graduate students who intend to pursue faculty careers. Other panelists included Risa Lieberwitz, Cornell University, and Robert Rubinstein, Syracuse University.
Rhiannon Maton
Rhiannon Maton, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, had a book review published in Teachers College Record. She reviewed the book Exploring Gender and LGBTQ Issues in K-12 and Teacher Education: A Rainbow Assemblage.
