Jaclyn Lawrence ’12, Athletics Department, was invited to participate in the Syracuse Crunch Women in Sports Panel held Friday, March 31 at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. The event was held prior to the Crunch game.
Panelists also included Syracuse Crunch Vice President of Communications and Digital Media Megan Cahill, American Hockey League Vice President of Hockey Operations Haley Moore, Learfield Syracuse Sports Properties Manager of Partnership Services Ally McConaughy and New York Islanders Community Relations Manager Jackie Decker.
Mecke Nagel
Mecke Nagel, Philosophy and Africana Studies departments and the Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies, learned that her Wagadu article, “OAJ and Wagadu: Towards a Diamond Model of Feminist, Postcolonial Publishing,” was published in the journal TripleC - Communication, Capitalism & Critique: Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society, available at www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/527.
Tyler Bradway
Tyler Bradway, English Department, had a new paperback edition of his book, Queer Experimental Literature: The Affective Politics of Bad Reading, published in February. Also, his essay “Queer Theory Now and the Pleasure of Movement,” with E.L. McCallum, was published on FifteenEightyFour: The Cambridge University Press Blog.
Herb Haines
Herb Haines, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was interviewed live on April 6 by the host of “This Morning,” a public affairs program of the South Korean radio station TBS eFM. The program dealt with South Korea’s impending decision on whether to officially abolish capital punishment.
Kathleen Lawrence
Kathleen Lawrence, Communication Studies Department, had her paper, “Get It While It’s Hot: A Rhetorical Examination of The Use of Female Images to Pimp Beauty, Sexuality and Vulnerability as Commodities in Contemporary American Advertising,” competitively selected for presentation at the national American Popular Culture Association Annual Conference held in April in Boston, Mass. Lawrence used stylistic tropes to examine and identify a variety of images incorporated into print advertisements to suggest overt sexuality and promiscuity. Other images offer beauty products aimed at exacerbating the viewer’s sense of vulnerability and inadequacy. Lawrence focused her rhetorical analysis on the combination of pressures inherent in an emphasis on purity while stressing the desired expectation of blatant sexuality from women. In addition, she illustrated the paradoxical dilemma created for contemporary female consumers and argued that this practice can create a backlash effect.
Amy Berg
Amy Berg, Information Resources, is a recipient, along with two colleagues, of the SUNY Council of Chief Information Officers (CCIO) Team Collaboration Award for the implementation of SUNY Breach Insurance Program. The SUNY Breach Insurance program provides SUNY colleges with a cost effective and easy to procure process for acquiring breach insurance for an individual campus. It took about a year from idea to realization. Through their efforts and stewardship and close collaboration with colleagues, data breach insurance, once unattainable due to cost, is now within reach to many SUNY campuses at a reasonable price point. The Team Collaboration Award recognizes individuals, groups or institutions whose work exemplifies CCIO’s efforts to build and support SUNY’s IT community. The awards were presented at the annual SUNY Technology Conference held June 20-22 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Jeremy Jiménez
Jeremy Jiménez, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, had his co-written article about high school student experiences in the first combined LGBTQ+/Ethnic Studies course in a U.S. public school published in The Journal of Social Studies Research.
Tiantian Zheng
Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was invited by four universities to deliver two campus-wide book talks on her book Tongzhi Living, one talk on criminology and fieldwork, and one talk titled “Gender, Law and Women Trafficking in Chinese History.” The talks were presented at University of Macau in September 2021, Case Western University on Feb. 11, University of Toronto on March 5 and University of London on March 21.
Teagan Bradway
Teagan Bradway, English Department, was elected to serve a five-year term on the Modern Language Association (MLA) Sexuality Studies Executive Committee. She also gave a presentation on LGBTQ+ kinship narratives at the annual MLA Convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jeremiah Donovan
Jeremiah Donovan, Art and Art History Department, had his recent ceramic work selected by jury for inclusion in the National Juried Small Works Show at the Windsor Whip Works Art Center in Windsor, N.Y. This exhibition will open Saturday, Dec. 1, and continues through Saturday, Jan. 12. In August, Donovan and former B.F.A. student Xena Holzapfel were selected to exhibit their ceramic art work at the Elmira Arnot Art Museum Biennial Gallery Gala, an invitational exhibition of artists from throughout the Northeast.
