Gregory D. Phelan
Gregory D. Phelan, Chemistry Department, had his paper, “Properties and Structure of Two Fluorinated 1,10-phenanthrolines,” accepted for publication later this year in the peer-reviewed Journal of Fluorine Chemistry. Also, Phelan had his 15th United States Patent issued on Feb. 10. The patent, 8,952,102, is titled “Alkyl ether compositions and methods of use.”
Hugh Anderson
Hugh Anderson, International Programs Office, will present “Preparing Students to Study Abroad More Sustainably” on Oct. 5 at the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) All-Region Summit.
Susan Rayl
Susan Rayl, Kinesiology Department, has had three book reviews published. Her review of Racism and the Olympics, by Robert G. Weisbord, was published this summer in the Journal of Sport History, a peer-reviewed journal. The Sport Literature Association published her reviews online of Greatness in the Shadows: Larry Doby and the Integration of the American League, by Douglas M. Branson, on July 17, and Wartime Basketball: The Emergence of a National Sport During World War II, by Douglas Stark, on Sept. 6.
Doug Langhans
Doug Langhans, Admissions, represented Study New York, a consortium of SUNY, CUNY and private institutions formed to promote New York as a destination for international students, at the International Consultants for Education and Fairs (ICEF) 2015 North American Workshop. Langhans, a Study New York Board Member, met with a variety of international education colleagues to discuss the advantages of studying in New York.
David Kilpatrick
David Kilpatrick, Psychology Department, was the featured presenter at the Wyoming School Psychology Association fall conference on Oct. 22 and 23 and an invited presenter at the Florida Association of School Psychologists annual conference on Oct. 30. His topic for both presentations was on highly effective interventions for reading difficulties and disabilities.
Mark Dodds
Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, recently was interviewed by the radio show “ESPN The Classroom” about the legal issues surrounding the FIFA corruption story. FIFA is the international federation for association football (soccer).
John C. Hartsock
John C. Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, has been invited to lecture for two weeks at South China University of Technology in Guang Zhou, China, in the fall of 2014. The invitation is part of the university’s “Attracting Intelligence” program. Hartsock will give graduate lectures on American and global literary journalism, investigative journalism and American media law. Guang Zhou, perhaps better known to Westerners as Canton, is China’s third largest city, 75 miles north of Hong Kong. The university has an enrollment of more than 100,000.
In other news, Hartsock learned recently that a scholarly article of his was republished in the August issue of the Chinese journal Journalism Bimonthly, which is published by Fudan University in Shanghai. The article, “‘Literary Reportage’: The ‘Other’ Literary Journalism,” was originally published in Genre: Forms of Discourse and Culture, vol. XLII (2009). The Chinese version was translated by Li Mei, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at South China University of Technology.
James Hokanson, Peter McGinnis and Steve Patrick
James Hokanson, Peter McGinnis, Kinesiology Department, and Steve Patrick, Athletics Department, recently had their research article published in the journal Sports. The article, co-authored by Casey Austin ’14, M.S. ’18, investigated the relationship between a new wearable running power meter, the Stryd Footpod, and running efficiency.

Chris McRoberts, Geology Department, co-presented a paper with undergraduate student Carolyn Furlong, titled “Commensal Endolithic Boring Traces on Spiriferid Hosts from the Middle Devonian of Central New York,” at the combined Northeast/Northcentral regional meeting of the Geological Society of America held March 20-22 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is co-author of a new, third edition of The Gun Debate: An Encyclopedia of Gun Control and Gun Rights, just published by Grey House Publishers. Spitzer’s book co-author is Glenn Utter of Lamar University. The book is an A-to-Z compendium of topics and issues related to the American gun debate.
